A preposterous yarn spun by the prolific, but hackneyed author, Dean Koontz. Still ahead of it’s time the film was predicting scientific breakthroughs including cloning, the internet, A.I. and artificial insemination…all of which were dismissed as “science fiction” for the day. A supercomputer is given artificial intelligence to assist in helping mankind solve problems, and it promptly attempt to “get out” of the confines placed around it to keep it in check. Designated Proteus, it finds an unsecured terminal and transfers its’ consciousness there, taking over the automated home of his creator and tormenting his wife, psychologist Susan Harris. A battle of wits ensues between Susan and the machine, who finds to her horror that Proteus intends to impregnate her with cloned cells of his own making, to birth a fully artificial being.
